Welcome to The Multicultural Counseling and Development Division
Michelle L. Chaney, LCPC, CAC-ADS
As a licensed clinical professional counselor and certified addiction counselor, it is my pleasure to continue to support MAMCD in providing its members, the community and stakeholders with attention to the way multiculturalism, intersectionality and social justice is addressed in the counseling relationship and in the counseling profession. As a dual credentialed professional, my expertise in chemical addiction counseling has resulted from over a decade of working with opioid dependency, which added breath to understanding the complexity of mental health related issues. I am also a state approved addiction counselor supervisor and doctoral candidate (Ed.D) at Argosy University, Washington DC, enrolled in the Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) program.
As MAMCD president, it is my hope to continue to inform counseling students and counseling professionals of the importance in improving clinical interventions as well as standards and practices of multicultural counseling within the counseling profession. Developing self-awareness of personal values, beliefs and biases is a challenging aspect of personal and professional growth and in the counseling profession it can be difficult to suspend them as they are rooted in of our sense of self. I believe it is incumbent on all counseling students and professionals to demonstrate to the members of diverse communities that increasing culturally awareness is not a means to some end and it is the counseling professionals’ responsibility to advocate this.
The Maryland Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (MAMCD) is devoted to promoting a greater understanding of culture and ethnicity to the counseling profession, while at the same time, improving on the clinical interventions for improving on the standards and practices of multicultural counseling.
